Why dont you like Gimp, and what did you use if you didnt use Gimp?
I took the original of my flag, and the original whatever this is, an opened in GIMP as 2 different layers. I resized and rotated my flag until it was just a little bigger than that flag, then I went back to the clone layer and set the eraser to half-opacity (roughly, it takes lotsa guess & check work) and erased the clones' flag, then touched it up by using the paintbrush in orange and blue. Yours would probably take a bit more work to touch up, but it would still look okay without touching up.
